O brasileiro Roberto Azevêdo, 55, foi eleito nesta terça-feira como diretor-geral da OMC (Organização Mundial do Comércio). É a primeira vez em que um latino-americano é eleito para um mandato completo de quatro anos.
Na última fase da disputa, Azevêdo derrotou o mexicano Herminio Blanco, 62, e trouxe ao Brasil uma de suas maiores vitórias diplomáticas. A decisão foi tomada em Genebra com a participação dos 159 países que integram a entidade.
A presidente Dilma Rousseff e o Itamaraty fizeram campanha intensa pelo brasileiro desde dezembro de 2012. O chanceler Antonio Patriota já recebeu a notícia da vitória, e a delegação do México já reconheceu a derrota.
O placar da votação ainda não foi divulgado. Ontem, a União Europeia decidiu votar em bloco a favor do México, e com isso o Brasil contabilizou ter perdido cerca de 12 votos. Mesmo assim, conforme fontes diplomáticas, os votos mostram que o brasileiro conta com uma grande margem de representatividade e teve vitória “inequívoca”.
O resultado será anunciado oficialmente na quarta-feira (8) e a nomeação de Azevêdo será oficializada no dia 14, durante reunião do Conselho Geral da OMC. Ao todo, nove candidatos concorreram à sucessão do francês Pascal Lamy, dono do cargo há oito anos. Azevêdo assume o posto em setembro.
Nesta terça-feira, os três embaixadores que integram a comissão de seleção do novo diretor-geral se reuniram com as delegações do Brasil e do México para antecipar o resultado da disputa.
